THE IDEA
2021 is a difficult time to be an aspiring writer, so this blog has a number of aims.
1. Display and promote my work over the coming years.
2. Help other writers from under-represented groups in writing, theatre and film.
3. Publish interviews from working-class writers in the hope their stories can inspire the rest of us.
I have been casually writing poems and short stories for several years, without trying to publish anything. I did write and direct two short films, 'Winners and Losers' and 'The Drinking Class'. I was lucky to receive help from my community to populate the cast and crew, as well as a local production team in Coventry, 'Call the Shots'. However, with an upcoming play 'Fighting Irish' in the works, it's time for me to start promoting and publishing work. A local theatre company, 'Blindspot Theatre' were kind enough to help me stage a preview of the play at one of their scratch nights in 2019. This help I have received is the inspiration for the second and third aims on this page.
I will publish work from working-class writers, or indeed any group that is under-represented in writing, theatre or film. It is so important for society to hear from these groups who contribute so much to society, and so important for these groups to see their work, or that of their counterparts being promoted on television and stage. In the case of this page, I want to offer a simple starting point of being published, while also showing the journeys of writers who have already made great leaps into recognition and acclaim.
Being published on this site is a very small step, but hopefully some well-deserved confidence from it can lead to big things.
I hope you enjoy the site,
Jamie
